From home working and home learning to staying in touch with friends and relatives, families have been online more than ever. But young people and their parents and carers can find it hard to agree on the right balance, and make the most of what digital offers. That's where Your Digital Family comes in.
Created in collaboration with Parent Zone and The Mix, with support from Facebook and Instagram, Your Digital Family has been created to encourage families to share more experiences and improve their communication around their digital lives. It is delivered via a now-familiar format to lots of families – an online quiz – and aims to bring families closer together and to bridge the gap that sometimes exists between young people and their parents/carers in their understanding of each other’s experiences with tech.
Evidence shows that when young people have an open and supportive relationship with their parents and carers about tech, it fosters their digital resilience and allows them to benefit from all the opportunities that tech brings. But we know that parents and carers sometimes need a way to have those conversations and get an understanding of their children’s digital lives without seeming intrusive.
That’s what Your Digital Family was designed for. Three quiz rounds, interspersed with short animated films, encourage families to work as a team and think about how they might talk, connect and act together to make their digital family life even better.
The unique collaboration between Parent Zone, the experts in digital family life, and The Mix, the leading provider of online advice and support to 13-25s, has meant that the programme has been developed from the perspective of parents and young people – a crucial element of resonating with, and engaging, the whole family.
The Your Digital Family online quiz is really just a starting point, enabling organisations working with families to kick off their work and support in this integral aspect of family life. The grant programme includes training to host the event, as well as funding to cover your costs and further ideas for activities you can run, or encourage families to do.
Any organisation affiliated with the Connection Coalition can apply to receive the funding and training; we’re looking to work with organisations who will bring creativity and enthusiasm to hosting an online event for the families in their community. The quiz is aimed at families with secondary school aged children (11+) as this is the age where parents and carers tell us the support around digital often tails off.
The programme recognises that events like these don’t just organise themselves! So we’re providing grants of £1,000 per application to cover your time to attend the training, practice your hosting skills and get to grips with online delivery, as well as covering promotion and marketing your event and any prizes or goody bags you want to use to incentivise families to get involved.
Applications open on Thursday 3 September and we look forward to hearing from you!
